A river inhabited by about 500 saltwater crocodiles has been approved as a venue for rowing and canoeing events at the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brisbane.
The decision means the waterway is expected to be used for both Olympic and Paralympic competition when the Games are held in Queensland in 2032. The events identified for the venue are rowing and canoeing, two disciplines that require athletes to compete directly on open water.
The most striking feature of the selected river is its wildlife population. Saltwater crocodiles are reported to live in the area in significant numbers, with the figure put at around 500.
The approval confirms the river’s place in the current Brisbane 2032 venue plans. On the information available, the latest position is that the site has been given the go-ahead to host the rowing and canoeing programme for both the Olympics and Paralympics.
