Democrats have secured control of Congress following a decisive electoral victory, giving the party the ability to advance legislation through the institution. The result marks a significant shift in political control and provides Democrats with greater authority over the legislative agenda.
However, the party’s ability to turn its proposals into law remains limited by President Donald Trump’s veto power. Even if Democratic-backed legislation passes through Congress, the president can prevent it from taking effect by rejecting it.
The new political balance therefore presents Democrats with both an opportunity and a challenge. They can use their control of Congress to put forward and approve legislation, but must contend with the possibility that Mr Trump will block measures he opposes.
The focus now turns to how Democrats will use their control of Congress and whether they can overcome the limits imposed by the president’s veto authority.
